In 2024, Kandy Consulting Group Pvt (ltd), conducted a pilot survey in partnership with Verité Research, an independent research institute in Sri Lanka.  This is a part of a large International Research Project Spanning through Nine Countries.

Locally, The Research Is Led by Prof. Dileni Gunewardena and Co-Led by Mr. Kanishka Werawella.  The Purpose of this Research Is to Explore How Families in Sri Lanka Provide Paid and Unpaid Care for Children, Older Adults, And Disabled Family Members, As Well As to Identify Unmet Care Needs.

Participation in this study was entirely voluntary.  If someone wants to participate, we conducted a survey lasting 60-90 minutes with the respondent and the respondent's household head.  The eligible household was the one that contained an eligible caregiver(s).  An eligible caregiver is a person who is responsible for the wellbeing of any eligible care recipient within the same household or elsewhere.

This survey questionnaire covered topics such as household demographics, caregiving, employment, and household expenditures. These findings aim to enhance understanding of caregiving in Sri Lanka and inform policies to better support families in similar situations.

An eligible caregiver should be a care 

  • children 5 years of age and under. 
  • Adults 65 and over and requiring assistance with ADL (Basic activities that allow a person to care for themselves, such as eating, dressing, and using the toilet), IADL (More complex activities that help a person live independently, such as managing finances and medications) 
  • Child over 5 years or adult under the age of 65 who requires assistance with ADL (Basic activities that allow a person to care for themselves, such as eating, dressing, and using the toilet), IADL (More complex activities that help a person live independently, such as managing finances and medications)
